Eid Mubarak!

Assalamu Alaykum

Eid Mubarak! Eid al Fitr 2017 is on Sunday, June 25, 2017.

The Crescent Committee of Canada has received reliable reports of the new crescent moon sighting for the month of Shawwal 1438 on the evening of Saturday June 24th 2017 (29th Ramadan). Therefore the blessed month of Ramadan concludes and the 1st of Shawwal (Eid al Fitr 2017) is on Sunday 25th of June, 2017.

We have confirmation that the Judicial Council of Saudi Arabia has declared the beginning of Shawwal based on testimony taken from moon watchers. As the day progresses, we expect additional sightings from the Americas, in particular in the southern regions.

It must be noted that the Crescent Committee considers the declarations of international moon sighting committees and judicial councils as reliable, even though at times the judicial councils or committees may make a declaration against calculations or astronomy. The decisions of the judicial councils will be deemed more authentic than calculations as described in all major fiqh manuals. The great jurist, Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allah’s mercy be with him) stated,

حكم‌ القاضي‌ نافذ ظاهراً وباطناً
“The verdict of an Islamic judge (or a judicial council) must be implemented (and effected) from all perspectives.”

One of the reasons for this stance by the Crescent Committee of Canada is to unite majority Canadian Muslims on a single day for Eid celebrations. This is an era which demands unity and uniformity. We acknowledge that there are multiple positions in the matter of moon sighting and we respect all perspectives.

Please refer to our guidelines and procedures for full details:

We wish the entire Muslim world a happy Eid al Fitr, with acceptance of prayers, worship, fasting and charity. We pray for a world of peace and harmony for everyone.
