Notice from Islamic Foundation on Alleged Sexual Assault

February 28, 2018

Assalamu Alaikum Dear Parents and Community Members,

We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our former Full-Time Hifz teachers, Saleh Momla, is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault. He is no longer employed at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto. We have investigated with other students and staff and at this time, it appears to be an isolated incident.

This incident was reported immediately to the Toronto Police and the Children's Aid Society as soon as it was brought to our attention. This matter is currently under investigation by the Toronto Police and Children's Aid Society and we are cooperating with both and following their procedures and protocols.

We want to reassure all parents and the community that we as a school are very vigilant with the safety and security of our children.

We will also be conducting sessions for staff and students on abuse, how to identify it, and how to report it. There will also be a session for parents as well.

In order to protect the privacy and safety of the victim, and to not interfere with the criminal investigation, we cannot discuss the details of the allegations at this time. We takes these allegations very seriously, and in addition to the measures we have already taken to protect our students, we are currently planning to establish additional protocols to investigate allegations of this nature, and develop policies and practices to support our students, staff, and parents to prevent this type of incident from happening in the future. We will keep you informed of our progress with respect to these internal changes.

This email was issued today rather than earlier, so as to not interfere with the police investigation.

Thank you and Wassalam,

Board of Directors
Islamic Foundation of Toronto
